iUn día maravilloso para todos! Hispanic day 2022 kicked off with the usual style with Mr Schumm
greeting the children in a true Hispanic fashion! We then enjoyed a wonderful Collective Worship by our Mexican folk dancers. The children then sang La Cucaracha setting off to their various activities inspired by the Hispanic world. This year the learning focus was Hispanic artists from around the world.
Reception sported the colours of the Colombian flag. Inspired by Fernando Botero they made shape people creations with 2D shapes.
Year 1 learnt about Spain and focused on Pablo Picasso as their artist. They created Picasso style playdough faces as well as a giant cubist collage. They also enjoyed a surprise visit from Annabel’s mum and Clover’s dad who read to the children in Spanish and spoke about their Hispanic experiences.
Year 2 found out about Mexico. They produced Mexican timelines as well as papel picado with Cecelia’s mum and they explored the art of Frida Kahlo. Lil’s mum visited in the afternoon to read a Spanish story.
Year 3 looked delightful in the colour of Ecuador. They learnt facts about the Ecuadorian artist Oswaldo Guayasamin and they enjoyed an art workshop delivered by Winstons dad and a story from Julia’s mum.
Year 4 arrived to school dressed in the colours of the Peruvian flag. Elise’s dad and Margherita’s mum read stories to the children in Spanish. They learnt about artist Victor Delfin who liked to paint birds. They then created Peruvian masks and Delfin style flying chickens using paper straws and string. They even had a surprise visit from Paddington Bear!
Year 5 researched facts about their class country, Cuba. They learnt all about the Cuban artist Amelia Pelaez who liked to paint still life pictures in a cubist style. They then created their own still life creations using real fruit from Shepherds Bush Market. As if this wasn’t enough they enjoyed a return visit from Aunt Joan who taught them a beautiful Spanish song ‘Yo Vendo Unos Ojos Negros’.
Year 6 enjoyed a visit from Lara’s mum. She taught the children facts about Bolivia and read a Spanish story. Year 6 then learnt about artist Mamani Mamani who liked to paint vibrant paintings full of symbols. They then used these symbols to create their own Mamani paintings.
We are very grateful to all of our Spanish speaking St Stephens community who volunteered to read, present, sing and organise art activities with the children. It was great to hear our school language spoken by so many. Below are some of the day’s highlights and a little video of the day’s activities.
