A Friday Night Round Up from Mr Schumm

Good afternoon,

What a busy few weeks! On Wednesday we had our SIAMs Inspection, which saw the Religious Education, collective worship and vision of our school being scrutinised. The report will be published within the next few weeks and then I will be able to share the outcome with parents but I just wanted to say thank you to all those involved in the inspection especially, and of course, Mr Perry who leads RE within our school and does such a superb job.  Thank you to all those parents who spoke to the inspector and articulated what St Stephen’s means to their family.

Next Friday is Grandparent’s Day – please take a minute to log on to ParentMail and tell us which grandparents will be attending so we are aware of numbers. We are also really keen to have grandparents join us in the morning (and stay for lunch) to give a talk to classes so please email me head@ststephensce.lbhf.sch.uk if you have someone who can attend. We will be celebrating the Coronation, on that Friday, with a special picnic lunch so if you would like your child to have a school lunch on that day please contact the school office.  

Thank you to all those parents who joined us for our Year 6 meeting for their exciting trip to Spain – not long to go now!

 As most are aware, we are bringing bread to St Stephen’s which I am really excited about, to get this underway, we will need a little help by donating to the link below:

 Hurricane Floor Standing Planetary Commercial Mixer 30 Litre – JustGiving

 Having a mixer in school will allow the kitchen and our after school cooking club to bake fresh cakes and bread.

All of our students from Nursery to Year 6 will be baking as part of their learning experiences.  We will also be running a series of Community Bread events where we will invite families in to learn more about what we do and to share in making breads from our different St Stephen’s communities.

Reception Milne at Gunnersbury Triangle

On Thursday, Reception Milne were blessed with dry weather for the class trip to Gunnersbury Triangle, a small nature reserve in Chiswick. The children enjoyed hunting for mini-beasts and pond dipping. 

AHOY

Our House Captains visited their chosen charity of AHOY – https://ahoy.org.uk/support-us-2/ -last week. The centre is on the Thames close to the Cutty Sark. We had an amazing day mud larking on the Thames, practising our knot skills and working out on the rowing machines. The House Captains were able to present them with a donation of £800 raised from their Christmas Quiz and Easter Egg Raffle. They have invited us back to take part in rowing events on the Thames and the House Captains loved the fact that they do sleepovers at their centre!

Maths Challenge at Latymer.

The Maths Challenge program is back in full force at Latymer and a group of our Year 5 children thoroughly enjoyed their experience. For the next 6 weeks they will take part in this fantastic program that aims to make Maths Fun!

Mini London Marathon

Well done to a group of St Stephen’s children who ran London’s Mini Marathon, around part of the official course,  last Saturday. There were two races 2.6km and 1mile – and everyone had a fantastic time. Well done runners!

Year 5 at the LookOut

Today, Year 5 travelled to Hyde Park to the LookOut Education Centre. They explored the centre grounds and the wider park, identifying trees and plants and collecting flowers. Binoculars were used to watch the birds, they were even lucky enough to see some nest-building activity! They used the natural materials they collected to create a spring picture of a growing plant. They also investigated and observed life in the pond considering which animals are best suited to this habitat. 

Year 3 at the Gurdwara

Year 3 visited the Ealing Gurdwara today as part of their RE topic on Sikhism.  Earlier on in the week, we looked at Gurdwaras from around the world and then looked at what is inside.  We wore head scarves and before entering, took our shoes off as a sign of respect.  We listened to an interesting talk given by the khalsa and then were shown the room where Sikhs go to worship.  We also learned their holy book is so important, it has its own raised platform and a special cloth to cover it when it’s not being used.  We were invited to eat in the Langar – the free kitchen which serves delicious looking vegetarian food.  What a wonderful trip!

WW2 Projects Galore

One of the many highlights of Year 6 is the superb WW2 project (Year 5 parents get ready for it!), which sees children tasked with exploring a specific aspect of WW2 and presenting a project on their chosen topic. This morning the final projects were arriving and many need two people to carry them! This afternoon, they were on display to the whole school with the Year 6 explaining why they had chosen their topic and telling us lots of interesting facts.

 Year 4 at Perivale Woods

Year 4 had a super time at Perivale Woods ( such an amazing place – http://www.perivalewood.org.uk/ ) this week. The children from both classes rambled in the forest, observed mini beasts in their natural habitat and did a spot of pond dipping for aquatic beasties as well as enjoying the famous bluebells.

 Anyone for Cricket

On Monday, we took four Year 6 teams to a cricket tournament against Wetherby Prep. Sadly, the hardball match was cancelled. However, that did not stop everyone from enjoying the games and everyone played softball instead. It ended in a huge success and once again St Stephen’s came out on top. On Tuesday, it was Year 4’s turn for a cricket match against Wetherby. They had a superb time and returned home victorious.
